- Invented by Charles Wheatstone in the early 19th Centruy, the concertina is a small hexagonal free reed instrument which was later overshadowed by the arrival of the piano accordion
- Now enjoying something of a revival, there are two commonly found versions
- The Anglo Concertina produces a different note on the push and pull of the bellows giving two notes to each button. Used in Morris dance accompaniment and Irish music, you can play tunes with your right hand while vamping chords with the left
- The English Concertina is fully chromatic and produces the same note on the push and pull - the scale is made by alternating the right and left hands allowing fast melodies
