Atabaques are traditional Brazilian hand drums which can be mainly found in ritual Candomblé and in newer times also in Capoeira. The tuning system with sisal strings is a traditional and established way to pitch a drum and like this connects the drum with its African roots. The atabaque can be tuned by drawing wood wedges into the the metal ring. The stronger you pitch the wedges, the higher the head will be tuned. To relax the head, loosen the wedges. The atabaque is built with barrel technique, the skin is shaved and the shell is cast in an iron ring. The stand has also two steel rings for more stabilty and weight, the upper rim where the atabaque sits is padded.
